First Hungarian Postage Stamp, Franz Joseph I
Hungary · 1871 · 2 Krajczár
This stamp features a profile portrait of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, facing left. The design is simple, with the portrait enclosed in an oval frame, surrounded by ornate scrollwork and the denomination '2' at the bottom. This was the first postage stamp issued by Hungary as an independent postal administration following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867.
Issued on May 1, 1871, this stamp marks a significant step in Hungarian national identity and autonomy within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It replaced the stamps of the Austrian Empire previously used in the territory.
