Hungary Magyar Posta Definitive Stamp
Hungary · 1871 · 2 kr
This is the first postage stamp issued by Hungary, featuring a lithographed portrait of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria, who was also the King of Hungary. The design is simple, with the portrait in a central oval, surrounded by the inscription 'MAGYAR KIR. POSTA' (Hungarian Royal Post) and the denomination '2 kr' (krajczár) at the bottom. The stamp is imperforate and printed on unwatermarked paper.
Issued in 1871, this stamp marks the establishment of an independent Hungarian postal service following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, which created the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
