1858 Moldavian Aurochs' Head Stamp
Romania · 1858 · 27 Parale
This stamp, known as the 'Cap de Bour' or Aurochs' Head, was the first postage stamp issued by the Principality of Moldavia. The design features the head of an aurochs, the traditional heraldic symbol of Moldavia, along with a post horn, a five-pointed star, and the denomination in Cyrillic script. It was hand-stamped on laid paper, resulting in significant variations.
Issued in July 1858, this stamp represents a key moment in Romanian postal history and national identity, predating the full unification of the Romanian principalities. Its short period of use and the small number printed make it a legendary classic.
