Cap de Bour (Bull's Head) 27 Parale
Romania · 1858 · 27 Parale
This stamp features a simple yet iconic design of a bull's head (Cap de Bour) with a post horn below it, enclosed in a circle. The denomination '27 PARALE' is inscribed within the circle, and Cyrillic script for 'Porto Scrisorei' (Postage for a Letter) appears above. It was hand-stamped on laid paper, giving each example unique characteristics.
Issued by the Principality of Moldavia, this was the first postage stamp of the region that would become modern Romania. Its issuance marked a significant step in the development of an independent postal system and national identity.
