First Polish Postage Stamp, Eagle and Post Horns
Poland · 1860 · 10 Kopecks
This is the first postage stamp issued by Poland, known as 'Polska Nr 1'. The design features the Russian Imperial Eagle in the center, signifying Poland's status within the Russian Empire at the time, surrounded by the inscription 'ZA ŁÓDŹ KOP. 10' (For a lot, 10 kopecks) and 'POCZTOWĄ'. The stamp was printed in blue and rose colors on white paper without perforations.
Issued on January 1, 1860, for the Congress Kingdom of Poland, this stamp was in use for only a few years before Polish postal services were fully integrated into the Russian system following the January Uprising of 1863. Its short lifespan and historical significance make it a key item for collectors of Polish and classic European philately.
