This set of nine stamps commemorates the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco. The designs feature various allegorical figures and scenes related to the exposition, including the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Arch of the Setting Sun, and the Fountain of Energy. The stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company.
Issued to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and the 400th anniversary of Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean, the Panama-Pacific Exposition was a major world's fair that showcased global advancements and celebrated San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake.
