Panama-Pacific Exposition Commemorative Set
Panama · 1915 · 1c, 2c, 2½c, 5c, 10c, 12c, 15c, 20c, 50c
This commemorative set of nine stamps was issued by Panama to celebrate the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco. The designs feature a map of the Isthmus of Panama and a portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish explorer credited as the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the New World. The stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company.
The set marks the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914 and the 400th anniversary of Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean, both pivotal events for Panama and global trade.
