Panama Overprinted for Canal Zone, 2c Carmine Rose

Canal Zone · 1904 · 2c

This stamp is a definitive issue from Panama, Scott #79, overprinted with 'CANAL ZONE' in black ink. The original design features a map of the Isthmus of Panama, highlighting the route of the future canal, flanked by the coats of arms of Panama and Colombia.

Issued shortly after the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903 granted the United States rights to build and administer the Panama Canal, these overprinted Panamanian stamps were the first postage used in the newly established Canal Zone.
