Mauritius 1d Red 'Post Office'

Mauritius · 1847 · 1d (One Penny)

This stamp, known as the 'Post Office' issue, features a left-facing profile of Queen Victoria. It is one of the first two stamps ever issued by a British colony, printed locally in Port Louis. The inscription reads 'POST OFFICE' on the left panel, which was changed to 'POST PAID' on subsequent printings.

Issued under British colonial rule, these stamps were created for use on invitations to a ball hosted by the Governor's wife, Lady Gomm. Their extreme rarity is due to the small number printed and the error in the inscription.
