Post Office Mauritius, 'Penoe' Error
Mauritius · 1847 · 1 Penny
This stamp, one of the first two issued by the British colony of Mauritius, features a left-facing profile of Queen Victoria. It is renowned for the inscription 'Post Office' along the left panel, which was changed to 'Post Paid' on subsequent issues. The engraver, Joseph Barnard, also made a famous error, spelling 'Penny' as 'Penoe' on this one-penny version.
Issued in 1847, the 'Post Office' stamps are among the most famous and valuable in the world, representing the first British colonial issues. They were printed locally and used for invitations to a ball hosted by the Governor's wife.
