Mauritius 'Post Paid' 2d Blue, First Issue
Mauritius · 1847 · 2d (Two Pence)
This stamp, known as the 'Post Paid' issue, features a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria. It was locally engraved by Joseph Osmond Barnard and printed in deep blue. The inscription reads 'POST PAID' on the left panel, distinguishing it from the even rarer 'Post Office' issue.
Issued in 1847, this is one of the first two stamps issued by a British colonial government, making it a landmark in philatelic history. These stamps were created for use on invitations to a ball hosted by the Governor's wife, Lady Gomm.
