Italy 1861 20c Blue, First Issue of the Kingdom of Italy
Italy · 1861 · 20c
This stamp features a left-facing profile of King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. The design is simple, with the portrait enclosed in an oval frame, the denomination '20' at the bottom, and 'C. POSTE' at the top. This was one of the first stamps issued by the newly formed Kingdom of Italy.
Issued in 1861, this stamp marks the unification of Italy (the Risorgimento) and the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. It replaced the various stamps of the individual Italian states that existed prior to unification.
