Italian Post Offices in the Turkish Empire: La Canea Overprint

Italian Post Offices in the Turkish Empire · 1909 · 10 Para on 5c

This stamp is an Italian definitive issue, originally featuring King Victor Emmanuel III, that has been overprinted with 'LA CANEA' and a new denomination in Turkish currency (10 Para). The overprint was applied to adapt Italian stamps for use in the post office established in Canea (Chania), Crete, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire.

At the turn of the 20th century, several European powers maintained post offices in the Ottoman Empire to facilitate international mail and commerce. This stamp represents Italy's postal presence in Crete before the island's unification with Greece.
