Italian Social Republic G.N.R. Overprint

Italian Social Republic · 1943 ·

This series consists of existing Italian definitive and airmail stamps from the 'Imperiale' series that were overprinted with 'G.N.R.' in black or red. The overprint was applied by the Guarda Nazionale Repubblicana (Republican National Guard) in Brescia. These stamps were a provisional measure to assert the authority of the newly formed Italian Social Republic.

Issued in December 1943, these stamps represent the German-backed Italian Social Republic (RSI) established by Mussolini in Northern Italy after the armistice with the Allies. They were a temporary solution until new stamps could be designed and printed.
