Cape of Good Hope Triangular Stamp, Seated Hope

Cape of Good Hope · 1853 · 1d

This is the iconic first stamp issued by the Cape of Good Hope, notable for its distinctive triangular shape. The design features a seated allegorical figure of Hope, holding an anchor and leaning on a rock, symbolizing the colony's maritime identity as the 'Cape of Good Hope'. The denomination is shown in the lower corners.

Issued in 1853, this was the first triangular postage stamp in the British Empire and one of the world's earliest. Its unique shape was intended to make it easily distinguishable for postal clerks, especially illiterate ones, in dimly lit post offices.
