Cape of Good Hope Triangular, Seated Hope
Cape of Good Hope · 1853 · 1d
This is the iconic first stamp issued by the Cape of Good Hope, notable for its distinctive triangular shape. The design features a seated allegorical figure of Hope, leaning on an anchor with a vine and grapes in the background, symbolizing the colony's prosperity. It was printed by Perkins Bacon & Co. in London.
Issued in 1853, this was the first stamp from any British colony in Africa. Its triangular format was chosen to make it easily distinguishable from rectangular British stamps, preventing postal clerk errors.
