A circular brass case with a mica window encasing a 10-cent United States postage stamp, depicting George Washington. The reverse side typically features an advertisement.
Created during the American Civil War (1861-1865) to address a severe shortage of circulating coins, encased postage stamps served as a temporary form of fractional currency.
