Uganda Prestamp Postal Marking

Uganda · 1894 ·

This is a prestamp marking, a type of postal marking used before the introduction of adhesive postage stamps. Such markings were typically handstamped or written directly onto the letter or cover to indicate that postage had been paid or was due.

Prestamp mail from Uganda is from the period before the British East Africa Company or the subsequent British Protectorate issued its first official stamps in 1895. These markings are important artifacts of early postal history in the region.
