Uganda Protectorate Typewritten Issue
Uganda · 1895 · 5 Rupees
This is one of the first postage stamps issued for the Uganda Protectorate, famously known as the 'Uganda Typewriters'. Produced locally by Reverend Ernest Millar using a typewriter due to a shortage of official stamps, these provisional issues are renowned for their primitive yet charming design. The stamp features a simple frame with the denomination '5' and 'R' for Rupees, with the initials 'U G' at the top.
Issued in 1895, these stamps represent a period of early British colonial administration in East Africa and highlight the resourcefulness required in remote outposts of the British Empire.
