Trinidad and Tobago 'Lady McLeod' Local Post Stamp

Trinidad and Tobago · 1847 · 5c

The 'Lady McLeod' stamp features a simple design of a white steamship on a blue background, encircled by the text 'LADY Mc LEOD'. Issued by the owner of the steamship Lady McLeod, David Bryce, it was used for mail carried between Port of Spain and San Fernando. This stamp is notable for being one of the world's earliest private post issues.

Issued in 1847, this local post stamp predates the first official government postage stamps of Trinidad by four years. It represents an early, private enterprise solution to mail delivery in the British colony before a standardized postal system was established.
