Trinidad "Lady McLeod" Private Post Stamp

Trinidad and Tobago · 1847 · 5 Cents

This privately issued stamp depicts the steamship S.S. Lady McLeod, which operated a mail service between Port of Spain and San Fernando. The design is a simple, uncolored woodcut showing the two-masted ship with the initials "LMc L" below. It is considered one of the world's earliest stamps, issued by a private carrier before the official government postal system.

Issued in 1847, the Lady McLeod stamp predates Trinidad's first official government postage stamp by four years, making it a significant pioneer in postal history and a classic of the British Empire.
