Mauritius "Post Office" 2d Blue
Mauritius · 1847 · 2 pence
This stamp, known as the 'Blue Mauritius', is one of the most famous and valuable stamps in the world. It features a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria and is inscribed with 'POST OFFICE' on the left panel, an inscription that was changed to 'POST PAID' on subsequent issues. The design was locally engraved by Joseph Osmond Barnard.
Issued during the British colonial period, these were the first stamps issued in any British colony. They were printed for use on invitations to a ball hosted by the Governor's wife, Lady Gomm, making them exceptionally rare today.
