Mauritius 'Post Office' Issue
Mauritius · 1847 · 1d / 2d
The Mauritius 'Post Office' stamps are among the most famous and valuable in the world. Issued in 1847, they feature a profile of Queen Victoria and were the first stamps issued in any British colony. The design is notable for its primitive engraving and the inscription 'POST OFFICE' on the left panel, which was changed to 'POST PAID' on subsequent printings.
These stamps were issued under British colonial rule for local postage, with some used for a famous ball hosted by the Governor's wife, Lady Gomm. Their extreme rarity is due to the small number printed and the fact that most were used on invitations and subsequently discarded.
