Mauritius 'Post Office' 1d Orange and 2d Blue
Mauritius · 1847 · 1d Orange, 2d Blue
This issue features the first two postage stamps issued by the British colony of Mauritius. The design shows a left-facing profile of Queen Victoria and includes the inscription 'POST OFFICE' on the left panel. They were printed locally in Port Louis by Joseph Osmond Barnard.
These are among the most famous and valuable stamps in the world, issued for a local postal service. The 'POST OFFICE' inscription was changed to 'POST PAID' on subsequent printings, making these originals exceptionally rare.
