Mauritius 1859 Dardenne Lithograph, Queen Victoria
Mauritius · 1859 · 2d
This stamp features a portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left, within an octagonal frame. The design is a local lithographic printing by L. A. Dardenne, based on the earlier 'Britannia' issues but with a cruder execution. The inscription reads 'POSTAGE' at the top and 'TWO PENCE' at the bottom.
Issued during the British colonial period, this stamp is one of the later 'primitives' of Mauritius, following the legendary 'Post Office' issues. It was printed locally due to delays in receiving stamps from Great Britain.
