Malta Queen Victoria Halfpenny Postage Stamp
Malta · 1860 · ½d
This stamp features a right-facing profile portrait of Queen Victoria, based on the 'Chalon Head' design by Alfred Edward Chalon. The design is simple, with the portrait in a central oval, surrounded by an ornate frame with 'MALTA' inscribed at the top and 'POSTAGE' at the bottom. The denomination 'HALF PENNY' is indicated in text below the portrait.
Issued on December 1, 1860, this was the first postage stamp ever issued by Malta, which was then a British colony. It was used solely for local mail within the Maltese islands for over two decades.
