Malta Halfpenny Yellow-Green, Queen Victoria
Malta · 1860 · ½d
This stamp features a right-facing profile of Queen Victoria, based on the 'Chalon Head' portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon. The design is simple, with the monarch's effigy in a central oval, surrounded by an ornate frame with the country name 'MALTA' at the top and the denomination 'HALF PENNY' at the bottom.
Issued in 1860, this was the very first postage stamp of Malta. It was used for local mail on the island, which was a British Crown Colony at the time.
