Central Lithuania Overprint on Lithuania Airmail Stamp

Central Lithuania · 1920 · 20 skatikų

This stamp is an overprint on a 1920 Lithuanian airmail issue. The original design features the Vytis (White Knight), the coat of arms of Lithuania, within a decorative frame. It was overprinted "SRODKOWA LITWA" (Central Lithuania) and a new denomination of 20 skatikų for use in the short-lived Republic of Central Lithuania.

Issued following the Żeligowski's Mutiny, these overprinted stamps were used in the Republic of Central Lithuania, a Polish-backed state that existed from 1920 to 1922 before its annexation by Poland.
