This airmail stamp features the portraits of Lithuanian-American pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. The design commemorates their historic transatlantic flight attempt in the aircraft 'Lituanica'. The stamp was issued to honor their bravery and contribution to aviation history.

In 1933, Darius and Girėnas attempted a non-stop flight from New York to Kaunas, Lithuania. Though they successfully crossed the Atlantic, their plane tragically crashed in Germany, just short of their destination, making them national heroes.
