Italian States, Modena 1852 Coat of Arms

Italian States (Modena) · 1852 · 5c

This stamp features the Este coat of arms, the ruling family of the Duchy of Modena. The design is typographed on colored paper, with the denomination 'CENT. 5' at the bottom and 'POSTE ESTENSI' (Este Post) at the top. It is one of the first stamps issued by the Duchy of Modena.

Issued by the Duchy of Modena before the unification of Italy, this stamp represents a period of independent postal systems among the various Italian states. These issues were replaced by those of the Kingdom of Italy after 1860.
