Queen Victoria 1/2 Anna Blue on Official Embossed Cover, 1881

British India · 1881 · 1/2 Anna

This is an example of the 1866 Queen Victoria 1/2 Anna blue stamp, overprinted 'Service' for official government use. The stamp is affixed to a Government of India embossed official cover and cancelled with a Cooper Type 17 postmark, a distinctive duplex cancel used in British India.

During the British Raj, official mail was handled using specially overprinted stamps and stationery to prevent misuse and ensure proper accounting for government postage.
