Greece (Chios) 1913 Overprint on Turkish Stamp
Greece · 1913 · 10 Para
This stamp is a Turkish issue featuring the 'Tughra' (the elaborate calligraphic monogram of the Ottoman Sultan) overprinted in Greek with "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΚΑΤΟΧΗ ΧΙΟΥ" (Hellenic Occupation of Chios). The overprint signifies the change in administration of the island from the Ottoman Empire to Greece. This particular issue is the 10 Para denomination, originally a Turkish stamp.
Issued during the First Balkan War after Greek forces captured the island of Chios from the Ottoman Empire in late 1912. These provisional stamps were created by overprinting existing Turkish stock until new Greek stamps could be supplied.
