First Issue of Egypt, Pyramid and Sphinx
Egypt · 1866 · 5 Para
This stamp features a classic design showcasing the iconic Great Sphinx of Giza with the Pyramids in the background. As the first postage stamp issued by Egypt, it uses an intricate, unwatermarked design printed by the Pellas Brothers of Genoa, Italy. The denomination is indicated in Arabic script within the design.
Issued under the authority of the Khedive of Egypt, then part of the Ottoman Empire, this stamp marked the establishment of a formal, government-run postal service, replacing various foreign post offices that had operated previously.
