Egypt 1866 1 Piastre Red-Brown Sphinx and Pyramid
Egypt · 1866 · 1 Piastre
This stamp features a classic design of the Great Sphinx of Giza with the Pyramids in the background. The central vignette is framed by an ornate border with the denomination '1 PIASTRE' at the bottom and Arabic inscriptions. This was part of the first regular issue of postage stamps for Egypt.
Issued under the authority of the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan, this stamp represents the establishment of a formal postal system in Egypt, which was then an autonomous state within the Ottoman Empire.
