Basel Dove
Switzerland · 1845 · 2½ rappen
The Basel Dove is a notable stamp issued by the Swiss canton of Basel in 1845. Designed by architect Melchior Berri, it features a white dove embossed in the center, carrying a letter in its beak, surrounded by the inscription "STADT POST BASEL". It is renowned for being the world's first tri-color stamp, printed in black, crimson, and blue.
Issued before the unification of the Swiss postal system in 1849, this stamp is one of the famous 'cantonal issues' and represents a key milestone in early postal history and stamp design.
