Switzerland 1862-82 Seated Helvetia & Standing Helvetia with 'Ausser Kurs' Overprint
Switzerland · 1881 · Various
This is a collection of seven different definitive stamps from the Seated Helvetia and Standing Helvetia series, originally issued between 1862 and 1882. Each stamp has been overprinted with the German text 'Ausser Kurs' (Out of Circulation), officially demonetizing them. These overprints were applied in 1881 to prevent fraudulent use after the stamps were replaced by new designs.
The 'Ausser Kurs' overprints were a measure by the Swiss postal authority to invalidate older stamp stocks following the introduction of the new 'Standing Helvetia' issues, ensuring a clean transition and preventing revenue loss.
