Canada 1/2c Large Queen on Laid Paper

Canada · 1868 · 1/2c

This stamp features a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria, based on a drawing by Charles Henry Jeens. It is part of the 'Large Queens' issue, the first series printed in Canada by the British American Bank Note Company. The design is noted for its fine engraving and the distinctive 'laid' paper on which this particular variety was printed.

Issued shortly after the Canadian Confederation in 1867, the Large Queens series was the first stamp issue for the newly formed Dominion of Canada, replacing the previous provincial issues.
