Nova Scotia 12½c Black, Queen Victoria

Nova Scotia · 1860 · 12½c

This definitive stamp features a right-facing portrait of a young Queen Victoria, based on the 'Chalon Head' portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon. The design is framed by an ornate oval with the denomination 'TWELVE & HALF CENTS' inscribed below. The stamp is printed in black on yellowish wove paper and was issued as part of Nova Scotia's first decimal currency series.

Issued in 1860, this stamp reflects Nova Scotia's transition from pounds, shillings, and pence to a decimal currency system, just a few years before it joined the Canadian Confederation in 1867. The 12½c denomination was equivalent to the former 7½d rate.
