Brazil 1843 'Bull's Eye' 30 Réis Black
Brazil · 1843 · 30 Réis
This stamp, known as the 'Olho de Boi' or 'Bull's Eye', is the first postage stamp issued by Brazil and the second in the world, following Great Britain's Penny Black. The design features a large numeral '30' within an ornate, oval guilloché pattern, without the monarch's portrait or country name, a common feature of early stamps.
Issued under Emperor Dom Pedro II, this series made Brazil the second country in the world to adopt prepaid postage stamps for nationwide use. The design was intentionally abstract to avoid depicting a political figure.
