Bulgaria 1884 5 Stotinki on 30 Stotinki Surcharge
Bulgaria · 1884 · 5 Stotinki on 30 Stotinki
This stamp features the first coat of arms of the Principality of Bulgaria, a crowned lion rampant on a shield. It is an overprint, or surcharge, where the original 30 Stotinki denomination has been struck through and a new value of 5 Stotinki has been applied in black ink. The original stamp was part of the 1882 issue.
Issued during the Principality of Bulgaria under Prince Alexander I, this surcharge was a practical measure to meet postal demand for a lower denomination by repurposing existing stamp stock.
