Bangladesh First Definitive Stamps
Bangladesh · 1971 · Various (10p to 10r)
This set of eight stamps marks the first issue of the newly independent nation of Bangladesh. The designs feature potent national symbols, including a map of the country, the Dacca University massacre, the national flag, and a depiction of broken chains symbolizing freedom from Pakistan. The denominations were initially printed in Pakistani currency (paisa and rupees) before the introduction of the Taka.
Issued on July 29, 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, these stamps were a declaration of sovereignty and a tool for raising international awareness and funds for the independence movement, months before the war officially ended in December 1971.
