This is the first postage stamp issued for Bosnia and Herzegovina under Austro-Hungarian administration. The design features the imperial double-headed eagle of Austria-Hungary, with the Bosnian coat of arms on a shield at its center. The denomination is indicated in the corners, and the stamp is typographed on grayish paper without a watermark.
Following the 1878 Congress of Berlin, the Ottoman province of Bosnia and Herzegovina was placed under the administration of Austria-Hungary. This stamp marks the beginning of the Austro-Hungarian postal system in the region.
