This stamp features the double-headed eagle of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which administered Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time. The design is typographed on granite paper and was issued without perforations. It represents the first series of postage stamps for the territory under Austro-Hungarian rule.
Issued following the 1878 Congress of Berlin, which placed the Ottoman provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the administration of Austria-Hungary. These stamps replaced the previous Turkish issues.
