South Africa 1961 Decimal Currency Definitive Series

South Africa · 1961 · 1/2c to 1 Rand

This definitive series, known as the 'Decimal Dudes', was issued to coincide with South Africa's transition to a decimal currency system (Rand and Cents). The designs feature a vibrant collection of the nation's native flora and fauna, including the Springbok, Blue Crane, Protea flower, and various antelope species, rendered in a clean, modern style.

Issued on February 14, 1961, this set marked the introduction of the Rand, replacing the British-style Pound, Shillings, and Pence. This currency change occurred just before South Africa became a republic and left the Commonwealth in May 1961.
