French Colonies General Issues used in Indochina, Eagle and Crown
French Colonies · 1862 · 10c Bistre
This stamp, part of the French Colonies General Issues, features the imperial eagle surmounted by a crown, a design known as the 'Eagle and Crown' type. It was printed in bistre (a yellowish-brown color) and was intended for use across various French colonial territories, including what was then known as Cochinchina (part of modern Vietnam).
In 1862, France established the colony of Cochinchina in southern Vietnam. The first postage stamps used there were the general issues for all French colonies, as specific stamps for the region had not yet been produced.
