Uruguay 'Sun of May' First Issue
Uruguay · 1856 · 80 Centesimos
This stamp, part of Uruguay's first issue, features the 'Sun of May', a national emblem representing the Inca sun god Inti. The design is simple, with the denomination '80' prominently displayed below the radiant sun, framed by the inscription 'DILIGENCIA' (Stagecoach). This issue was intended for internal mail carried by stagecoach services.
Issued in 1856, these were the first postage stamps of Uruguay, known as the 'Soles de Montevideo' or 'Suns of Montevideo'. They were privately issued by the stagecoach firm of Anastasio de Lapido for mail routes within the country.
