Uruguay 1856 "Diligencia" 80c Green
Uruguay · 1856 · 80c
This stamp, known as the "Diligencia" (Stagecoach), is one of the first two stamps issued by Uruguay. The design features a radiant sun, a national symbol, above the inscription "DILIGENCIA" and the denomination "80" for 80 centesimos. The stamp was crudely printed by lithography, resulting in significant variations between individual examples.
Issued in October 1856 for use on internal mail routes carried by stagecoach, this stamp marks the beginning of Uruguayan philately. It was issued alongside a 60c value and is a classic issue highly sought after by collectors.
