Uruguay 'Diligencia' Sun of May
Uruguay · 1856 · 1 Real
This stamp, known as the 'Diligencia' (Stagecoach), is one of the first issues of Uruguay. It features a radiant 'Sun of May,' a national emblem representing the Inca sun god Inti and symbolizing independence. The simple yet iconic design was intended for use on mail carried by stagecoaches between major towns.
Issued in 1856, the Diligencia stamps were Uruguay's first postage stamps, privately issued by the stagecoach administrator Atanasio Lapido for prepayment of mail fees. They predate the first official government issues by three years.
