Uruguay 1859 "Thin Sun" 120 Centesimos Blue
Uruguay · 1859 · 120 Centesimos
This classic stamp from Uruguay features the "Sol de Mayo" (Sun of May), a national emblem representing the Inca sun god Inti. The design, known as the "Thin Sun" or "Sol Delgado" issue, is crudely lithographed and shows the sun with a face surrounded by sixteen rays. This was the first issue to use the 'Centesimos' denomination following currency reform.
Issued in 1859, this stamp represents Uruguay's early postal history and its efforts to establish a standardized national mail system. The design reflects the strong national identity of the young republic, which had gained its independence a few decades earlier.
