Uruguay - Artigas Sun Face, First Issue
Uruguay · 1856 · 60 Centesimos
This is Uruguay's first postage stamp, known as the 'Sol de Montevideo' or 'Sun of Montevideo'. The design features a radiant sun with a human face, a national emblem representing the 'Sun of May' and symbolizing independence. It was crudely printed by lithography, resulting in many variations.
Issued in 1856 for internal mail routes operated by stagecoach (diligencia), this stamp marks the beginning of Uruguay's postal history. It was replaced by a more refined series in 1858.
